Our media sir gave us a six-minute activity to help us brainstorm ideas for our film opening.
We had to draw a location, object, and stereotypical character from a bowl of random stuff written on chits. This was one of my favorite activities as it allowed us to use our imagination and go crazy with our ideas. With an exchange option offered by our sir to make the activity more interesting, we took our three chits and started brainstorming without changing them. |
These were our main focus points to incorporate into our storyline for a film opening. We came up with an idea for a thriller. The intro shot would be a backshot of the DJ from a low angle close mid shot showing only his silhouette and the night sky. As the person walks forward, the camera angle changes to his head level. The scene continues as a tracking shot in which an abandoned building is visible in front of him. A visual match cut is used with the same backshot, but this time the shot is inside the building which surprisingly turns out to be crowded.

Finally, our character is revealed with a side shot of him hyping up the crowd as says to the crowd “Are you guys ready?”. We see match-on-action cuts to shots of this same scene from a CCTV footage camera, a pov of a person in the crowd, and a symmetrically mid shot. From these shots we get to see more of the building to figure out it most probably had been some type of abandoned mall with two escalators to the top floor where the Dj was and the crowd on the ground floor. The RGB lights were on in the crowd in which we see our crowd and at first the background behind the DJ is pitch black as no content is playing on the led panels behind him. He proceeds to get the USB in which he had the display content but is confused about finding two identical USBs.
We see a close-up of his hands as he searches the desk in front of the USB beside his equipment and picks them up. This is followed by a close of his confused expression but as his friend from beside him calls him to start he puts down one USB and continues inserting the USB into his laptop. The camera switched to in front of the desk and we see a reflection of screen light on his face and an expression of utter horror. The shot has a shallow depth of focus as what is on screen is not visible initially as it's only a bit of dark reddish purple blobs behind him, and the crowd goes silent with whispers all around which are heard in a distorted manner to show disconnection from reality as if it everything was happening was an out of body experience. This shot continues as an extreme pullback to reveal the screen and what had caused such an extreme reaction. On this, the panels display a murder spree in the same exact mall and we hear a sting as the shot cuts to black to display the movie title. This opening would create an enigma about what is happening? Why is this happening? How is the DJ connected with all this? What happened here and how it happened? Did no one know about this and if they did why are the people still shocked? Basically doing what a film opening is supposed to do, build suspense and grab viewers attention. |
